Turtle Island Productions recently worked with award winning filmmaker Lorraine Norrgard, shooting dramatic re-enactments for her PBS documentary series "Seasons of Change," a six hour series focusing on the Ojibway (Chippewa) people of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Filming took place at the Wa-swa-goning ("Place where they spear fish with torches") Ojibway Village on the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa Reservation in northern Wisconsin.

Waswagoning Ojibway Village Birch bark Wigwam

Walk back in time to when the Ojibwe built wigwams and moved from area to area as the seasons changed, making articles fo survival out of the natural elements found in northern Wisconsin. Enter via a bough-laden arbor and join a walking tour for an hour or more through "Traditional Indian Villages" depicting the changing seasons and a way of life that honored the earth and natural resources.Look at reed wigwam skirts, willow fish traps, birch bark baskets, hand-made bows, arrows and spears, and articles for playing games. Walk a rustic trail lined with flora and fauna, foxfire and a forest of diverse trees as you listen to the sounds of the various birds, from the loon to the eagle, greeting you. Built on 20 acres along the shore of beautiful Moving Cloud Lake on the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation, Wa-Swa-Goning was the Ojibwe name of our whole area. The French fur traders called it Lac du Flambeau (Lake of Fire) when they saw the torches on the lakes as the Ojibwe speared fish at night. A unique learning experience for the entire family. The only village of its kind in the northwoods.

Wa-swa-goning is an ideal shooting location for film and television productions searching for an authentic Ojibway or other woodlands tribe setting. Several productions have already selected Wa-swa-goning for their location shooting, including the award winning chidren's education video series "People of the Forests," as well as the State of Wisconin's "Discover Wisconsin," and most recently the PBS documentary series "Seasons of Change."

Tours and settings featuring: Seasonal Villages,Traditional Lodges, Birch Bark Canoes, Maple Sugar Camps, Baskets, Traps and More. Located in northern Wisconsin on the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa Reservation.
