Wayquay

Recently awarded Best Music Video at the 22nd annual American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco, 1997, for her Music Video "Navigate."
"I gear my writing towards empowerment, moving people, and opening eyes through truth and humor,"saysWayquay.
Wayquay lives up to her name "Swangideed Wayquay" - "Lady Unafraid" living with one foot in the past and one in the present, and with an eye to the future. She retraces steps on the path left by her Ancestors to bring messages of simplicity, sharing and honor ... a hope for redirecting complicated lives through her medicine music.
Her "soulin" style fuses the rhythms and chants from her Native American background merge with the grooves of blues, rock, funk and poetry on her compelling new album "Tribal Grind" released by Global Beat. Songs like "Navigate," "Tribal Grind" and "Amber Waves" encompass her vision of bringing a positive message of simplicity and peace reflected by the Native American experience. Her music fits with the Global Beat philosophy of producing global artists for global markets.
Of Ojibway, Anishnabe descent, Wayquay was raised in rural Pennsylvania. This progressive, conscious musical poet and pioneer set off to New York City to find herself with a few dollars in her pocket and a 3-D vision. Soon, she wrote and directed a comedy play at Harlem's landmark Apollo Theatre, and even participated in a compilation album and concert benefit for survivors of the Kobe Japanese earthquake - before she had released a single record. Wayquay's original sound and vision is uniquely American.
Shania Twain

Beautiful, talented, mega-record selling Country/Pop star who may or may not be Ojibway depending on how you define being "Indian." Adopted and raised by an enrolled Ojibway family at a young age, Shania Twain grew up in a traditional Ojibway home and environment. In my book, that means she is Ojibway. For more info on her career do a keyword search for "Shania Twain" and you will discover more about Shania on the internet than you ever thought possible.
