Important Accommodations Information!!!

The Alcatraz 30th Anniversary Committee, consisting of a group of grass roots, community volunteers in the Bay Area (Native American and Metis) is making every effort to arrange some form of overnight housing for those attending this event from out of town who cannot afford the high cost of hotels in San Francisco. We have secured beds for 30 people at two different Youth Hostels for October 22, and 23: the Fort Mason American Youth Hostel, and the Union Square International Youth Hostel. Each Hostel can accomodate 15 people in seperate gender dormitory style rooms (bunkbeds, linen, showers included). The cost is $18, and $19 per person per night (depending on which Hostel you sign up for). The Ft. Mason Hostel also provides a continental breakfast, while the Union Square Hostel has a pay as used kitchen. Please do not bring sleeping bags if you choose to stay at one of the two Hostels. However, you should bring a towel and padlock if you want to rent one of their lockers for your belongings. These beds have been paid for by the 30th Anniversary Committee, however, if you can afford to pay for your own room, we would encourage that in order to keep our costs down and allocate that money to other needs (Hotels for Elders, for example). If you are interested in reserving space for yourself and/or your party you must contact the Alcatraz 30th Anniversary Committee ASAP at 650-738-9105 or 510-615-0603. Both Hostels require at complete list of nmes no later than October 12, 1999. Space is limited to 30 people on a first come, first serve basis.

URGENT!!!! We are still seeking
a licensed food vendor for this event!

If you are, or know of, a licensed food vendor (Native American preferred) who may be interested in providing the only food service on Alcatraz during the 30th Anniversary celebration, please contact us immediately at 650-738-9105 or pgr at 800-5206725. You must have a commercial license to sell food to the public, and you must provide a permit from the city of San Francisco to sell food at a public event on the day of the vent. The food vendor fee is $500, and you should be able to handle up to 2000 people from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Come join hundreds of Bay Area Native Americans in this special musical and cultural celebration commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1969-71 Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island, an event which many people credit as the spark which ignited the "Red Power" movement of the 1970s. There will be a special honoring of all occupation veterans, and presentations from occupation organizers and veterans, American Indian activists and leaders. In addition, there will be special screenings of the short documentary "We Hold the Rock," and a panel forum discussing "The Legacy of the Alcatraz Occupation and related issues."

More Background Information

In November of 1969, an historic event occurred in the San Francisco Bay which would leave a profound impact on the lives of Native American people. Beginning in the early afternoon of November 9, and continuing later that evening, a flurry of activities ignited the hopes and dreams of reclaiming Alcatraz Island in the name of Indian people. Finally, in the early morning hours of November 20, approximately 90 Native American students and Bay Area Native community members gathered in Sausalito to begin the third and successful journey to reclaim the island. Led by university students Richard Oakes, La Nada (Means) Boyer, Al Miller, and others, the landing and occupation of Alcatraz Island set in motion what would later be termed the "Red Power" movement of the 1970s. After the initial outpouring of local, national, and international support, the growing number of Indians on Alcatraz settled in for a 19-month occupation intent on reclaiming the island as Indian land, as well as bring national attention to the social and political struggles facing American Indians. In June of 1971, U.S. Federal Marshals removed the remaining Indian occupants, and although the physical occupation ended, the movement which Alcatraz ignited continues today.

The successes of the Alcatraz Occupation can be witnessed on reservations and in urban areas all across the U.S. today. The advancements of American Indians in education, health care, adoption, repatriation, religious freedoms, self-determination, treaty rights, and other areas can be traced to the courage and sacrifices so bravely exemplified by the Alcatraz Occupation veterans. Furthermore, the American Indian cultural and spiritual renaissance, which many people give credit to Alcatraz, continues to affect the lives of Native Americans 30 years after the Occupation. Today, the Occupation stands out as a beacon of pride for Native American people, a symbol of freedom and self-determination, and a rebirth of our sense of identity, culture, and traditions.

In the tradition of honoring our warriors, it is important for us to remember the bravery and sacrifices of those individuals who made the Alcatraz Occupation a watershed in the history of all Native Americans. Thus, there will be a 30th Anniversary Celebration of the 1969-71 Indian occupation of Alcatraz during which we will acknowledge the contributions of all Occupation veterans. A committee has been formed to plan this historic reunion, and planning and organizational meetings with representatives of the National Park Service/Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Blue and Gold Fleet are under way to insure a successful and memorable celebration commemorating this event. American Indian artists, actors, activists, performers and filmmakers have already agreed to participate, and many leaders throughout Indian Country have agreed to attend.

The 30th Anniversary Celebration will take place on Saturday, October 23, 1999, from 9:00 AM. to 4:30 PM on Alcatraz Island, beginning with an opening ceremony and California Indian dancing and singing. The event will feature presentations from Occupation veterans, national Indian leaders, dignitaries, and contemporary and traditional Native American performances featuring John Trudell, Rita Coolidge and Walela, Ulali, Charlie Hill, Arigon Starr and Gayle Hanson-Johnson. There will also be an Indian market featuring artists and crafts, a special screening of the short documentary "WeHold the Rock," and a panel forum of Native American educators, activists, and Occupation veterans discussing the legacy of Alcatraz and related issues.
